What it is
Vite is a build tool for modern web projects made of two parts: a development server that serves source files as native ES modules with hot module replacement, and a build command that bundles code with Rolldown into optimized static assets for production. It can be extended through a typed plugin API and a JavaScript API, and ships a project scaffolder, create-vite. Frontend developers use it to start new apps quickly and to get near-instant feedback while editing code in frameworks like Vue, React, or Svelte.
