What it is

Codex CLI is OpenAI's coding agent that works on your own machine from the terminal, where it reads your project, edits files, and runs commands for you. It signs in with a ChatGPT plan or an API key and is installed as a single binary via npm, Homebrew, or a shell script. Developers use it to hand off coding tasks to a model without leaving the command line, with editor and desktop front ends also available.
