What it is

pdf-inspector reads a PDF, decides whether it is text-based, scanned, image-based, or mixed, and pulls out position-aware text, tables, headings, and lists as Markdown without running OCR. Pages that do need OCR can be routed to a local OCR model selectively, with per-page reporting. Developers building document ingestion or LLM pipelines use it from Rust, Python, Node.js, the browser via WebAssembly, or the pdf2md and detect-pdf command-line tools to skip costly OCR on PDFs that already contain text.
